The karyenda is a traditional African drum. It was the main symbol of Burundi and its mwami (kings) and had semi-divine status. The mwami was said to interpret the beatings of the karyenda into rules for the kingdom.

When Burundi gained independence from belgium 1962, the karyenda was the symbol on the national flag and its of arm coat from 1962 to 1966. It was replaced after the republic was established. Traditionally the most important folk songs and dances were performed to extol the virtues of the kingship. Bujumbura, is the capital, largest city, and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country’s chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. It is on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world after Lake Baikal.

Today we’ll take a boat ride across Lake Kivu, a real highlight of the trip, before heading out for a short orientation tour of Goma on arrival. Goma is the capital city of North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, next to the Rwandan city of Gisenyi. Another early start as you head to the park’s headquarters for a briefing on the mountain gorillas. An experienced park ranger leads you up into the forest to view a troop, which are usually led by a huge male silverback. You have an unforgettable hour to observe them from close quarters – an amazing wildlife experience. Because of the close contact between gorillas and visitors (often as little as 7m), and the risk of passing on infections which are fatal for them, travelers who are ill will not be allowed on gorilla-tracking trips. After an morning breakfast we shall drive to Kibiti Ranger station prepared to hike Nyiragongo, Kibati patrol post is approximately 30 minutes by car from Goma. Park rangers lead all treks and porters (unaffiliated with the park) are available for hire. The time required to reach the summit depends on the average fitness of each group, but typically takes 4 – 6 hours. Altitude sickness can be an issue for some because the climb begins at 1989m (6,525 ft) and ascends to 3470m (11,382ft) in a short time. Overnight at the summit shelter.

Climbers typically descend the volcano at between 6:30 – 7:00 am the next morning and arrive back at Kibati station by 11:30 am, followed by a transfer across the border back to Rwanda at Gisenyi/Rubavu. After a leisure morning breakfast, you will visit Rubona Hot springs. The steep hills in Rubona are populated by small homesteads with surrounding gardens. The lake shore is rocky, in most areas, with occasional sandy spots and places suitable for swimming. It attracts many visitors on weekends. Rubona is also the location of natural hot springs, which are used for boiling potatoes and are reported to cure a variety of ailments. Afterwards transfer to Volcanoes National Park. Start early on your first morning for a trip to track the golden monkeys. These primates are beautiful, endangered and more agile than the mountain gorillas. The chimpanzee Habituation Experience is a unique opportunity that will allow you to follow a chimpanzee group in its daily activities. Proceed to Semliki National park after breakfast. Kabwoya Wildlife reserve is a hidden gem situated within the Western side of the Albertine Rift Valley between the breathtaking Blue Mountains of the Congo and Lake Albert and covers an area of 87 square miles. Early in the morning after lunch drive to Sipi River. Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls in Eastern Uganda in the district of Kapchorwa, northeast of Sironko and Mbale. The waterfalls lie on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park near the Kenyan border. The Sipi Falls area is the starting point for many hikes up Mt. Elgon. The most popular route starts in budadiri and follows the Sasa trail to the summit and then descends down the Sipi trail back into the Sipi Falls. Jinja enjoys a reputation as the adventure capital of Uganda, with a variety of different adrenaline filled activities to choose from.
